Amanda LaFauci serves as the Secretary of the Board of Directors for Malden Rising Leaders Inc. (MRL). Amanda is excited for this opportunity to serve the Malden community through MRL. She has high hopes for our new program’s potential to guide the future leaders of Malden during critical preparatory and transitional phases of their rising success.
Prior to joining MRL, Amanda works as Research Assistant in the Burch laboratory at Boston College where she worked with lasers and optics and took data on 2D magnetic materials using Raman spectroscopy. At Boston College, she was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant for various introductory courses and equally enjoyed those in which she taught laboratory experiments and those in which she held helpful conceptual and problem-solving sections to supplement students’ core lectures. Amanda plans to get a teaching license so she can continue inspiring students and showing them how amazing the laws of the natural world are.
Amanda was raised in Malden and was the Orator of Malden High School Class of 2011. At MHS, Amanda played trumpet in the Golden Tornado Marching Band and swam breast stroke and freestyle on the swim team. She also volunteered for the Malden Swim Clinic with her teammates. The clinic provided free weekend lessons for children to learn how to swim or improve their skills and technique.
Amanda continued her education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she was a member of the Commonwealth Honors College as well as a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Minuteman Marching Band. During her time at UMass, she was a Teaching Assistant and grader for several physics courses on campus, and she taught and tutored at North Star Self-Directed Learning for Teens in Hadley. The center has since moved to Sunderland. North Star offers an alternative to high school where students can learn and thrive in non-traditional classrooms and pursue their interests in whatever way is best for them. She ran small classes and one-on-one sessions to introduce students to mechanics and electromagnetism and explore specific topics in greater depth.
Amanda earned her Bachelor of Science in Physics with a minor in Mathematics in May of 2015. She also received her Master of Science in Physics at Boston College in May of 2017.
